Oversexed, Underachieving? Sex is everywhere, but so is sexual dysfunction

Over 40% of American women experience sexual dysfunction. Women have been knocking on the doors of their doctors wanting their own Viagra. And, doctors are giving them what they want - sort of.

Sex. It is arguably the most pervasive phenomenon in American culture – second perhaps only to greed and politics. It's in the television programs we watch, the movies we attend, the magazines we read, the clothes we wear, the cars we drive, even in our food and drink.

In fact, say researchers Allan and Donna Brauer in their book, Better Safer Sexual Intimacy and Extended Orgasmic Response, sex has become a very mental occupation.
Given all of that, you'd think Americans were whooping it up on a daily basis, enjoying uninhibited hedonistic – and erotic – pleasures, and having no troubles whatsoever with our individual and collective libidos.

Baby, you've got that wrong.

Sexual dysfunction

It's true sex is out there like it's never been before. But what's also out there like it never has been is how dysfunctional we Americans are sexually. And, that dysfunction crosses gender lines, no doubt about it.

Twenty million American men are impotent, or fail to achieve or maintain erection. And, more than half of American women have some form of female sexual dysfunction, most likely in the form of the failure to achieve an orgasm.

Those statistics are why we're seeing a deluge of sexual aids and enhancers come on the market. The most notorious being Viagra, a prescription drug for men with impotence.

But, while Viagra has had an enormous impact on men's sexuality, it unfortunately ignored more than half of the American population – women. What it did do, though, is to get people – all people – talking about sexual dysfunction.

Now women are knocking on the doors of their doctors wanting their own Viagra. And, doctors are giving them what they want – sort of.

Women's sexual products

A slew of women's sexual aids and enhancers have hit the market in the last few years – among them Niagara, Rendezvous, the Dream Cream, Vitara™, My Pleasure Self-Pleasuring Cream, Vigorex femme, Prosexual Plus, and a number of other sexual tools all designed to get women rocking along with their men.

All of the products are over-the-counter, although pharmaceutical companies are racing to develop their own versions of sex in a pill or bottle as well. For now, women apparently have a lot of other choices.

But do these products really help?
Depends on what you want them to do. Niagara, one of the most recent sexual enhancers is actually a drink. It's active ingredient? Caffeine. So, if you're looking for an orgasm and caffeine is what does it for you, then possibly Niagara will work for you. But watch out. At about $3.00 a bottle, it's an expensive round of fun.

One woman who used Niagara said that it didn't make her feel very sexy, but she had “a hell of a caffeine buzz.”

Another product in the news lately is the Dream Cream, which boasts an “increase in sensitivity, lubrication and sense of arousal.” It's main ingredient is L-Arginine, an essential amino acid that is thought to increase a woman's sensitivity thereby enabling her to achieve more heightened orgasms.

According to its developers rubbed gently on a woman's clitoris, the Dream Cream “can make things that feel good, feel great – and things that feel great, feel fabulous.”

But, according to Frank Toppo, M.D., a family medicine physician in Las Vegas, Nev., in research studies using laboratory animals, L-Arginine has to be used in mega-doses before it really has an effect.

“We're talking about enormous doses given orally, and that you wouldn't be able to give to humans,” explains Dr. Toppo. Plus, he says, it's never been shown that L-Arginine has any benefits when given topically.

Dr. Toppo and his wife, Shaina, created and developed their own topical sexual enhancer for women called Vitara™, which came onto the market less than a year ago. Theirs is the only female sexual aid to be listed in the Physicians Desk Reference and its ingredients each hold Food and Drug Administration (FDA) monographs.

A topical application similar to the Dream Cream, Vitara's™ main ingredients are N-methylnicotinate (a B vitamin), wild yam plant extract and DHEA. That combination of ingredients, but the N-methylnicotinate in particular, ignites a response called vasodilation, or the increase of blood to vessels.

It's that profound surge of blood to a woman's clitoris – the vasodilation – that in turn allows for a woman to achieve an orgasm, says Dr. Toppo.

Having better sex

All sexual aids and enhancers aside, achieving orgasm is as much mental and psychological as it is physical – and perhaps even moreso.

Pepper Schwartz, Ph.D., explains that it's important for women to be tuned in to their bodies' cues or their “orgasm potential.” Schwartz gives the following pointers for having better overall sex:

1) Every angle counts. Try new positions; don't be afraid to experiment.

2) Muscle strength matters. Up your orgasm intensity by exercising your Kegels – the muscles used to stop urinating midstream.

3) Use it or lose it. The more sex you have, the more desire you'll have.

4) Tell them what you really, really want. Men like knowing what turns you on.

5) Commit to clitoral stimulation. Most women need to experience clitoral stimulation during intercourse to achieve orgasm.

6) Skip the routine. Keep things from getting boring by surprising each other occasionally.

7) Get the right vibe. Try a vibrator during sex. Once you find the level of stimulation that suits, you're almost guaranteed to have an extraordinary orgasm.

8) Send out the search party. Each part of the vulva (the entire vagina) has its own pleasure zones. Explore to find yours.

9) Try a triple. See what happens when several areas of your body are being stimulated at once; the orgasm will be unbelievable.

10) Get creative. A little fantasy – either in your head or shared with a partner – can release the wild woman within.

Keep in mind that orgasms are good for your health – both mentally and physically. Trying one or a few of the above pointers and adding some extra zip with products like Vitara may be among the best things that you can do for yourself (and your partner).

And, who knows? Pleasure may just become a regular thing.
